today i went out to get meat
despite life's inherent sorrow
only because i feared tomorrow
i would run out of things to eat
at the market i met a cheat
who asked for a gun to borrow
his heart, he said, was hollow
no strength left in his feet
i gave in, and gave my gun
remembering i still owned a rope
his chance, i thought, was next to none
his mind unwashable by soap
but in the end i was quite stunned
to see blood saturate my coat
