i pondered as i waited in line with a banana
whether i am in the top ten of any list
and whether such a list could realistically exist
and who would put together the committee to oversee it

because if somebody would tell me each monday
where i stand relative to the previous seven days
i think i could be a better man in so many ways
just by gradually climbing up the fiercely-debated ranks

as if tumbling down the stairway to heaven
i would count down from seven
waiting for monday promptly at noon
knowing that i could be a better man soon
