the thing that's never done
never seizes to disturb me
even when the thing that's done
is nicer than i had hoped it'd be

if one was to place a gun next to me
i would do, i'd like to think
just what you know i'd like to say i'd do
but there isn't one that owns a gun and knows me

so it goes on, with girlfriends, and lunches
and shitty jokes with shitty people that
i hardly know, at least enough to decide
at least approximately, the degree of their shittiness

but one day, i swear on it,
especially since it's likely to be this week
or at least the next, i will surprise myself
and do either the thing not done, or vice versa
