stepped around garbage
found the sink
drowning a plate
in standing water

and this i imagine
is the scene on mars
under all that hard icy surface
deep in the darkness
of a rented space

a creature unlike any
that hollywood has ever imagined
(mostly because hollywood is
far too imaginative)
walks around in sweat pants
and a free shirt
from an old conference
on plasma science

the search for "extraterrestrial" life
for me is just the search for self
the longing of a cockroach
to share a sugary meal with another cockroach
before parting ways
in search of humid darkness
