but when you and i ride the midnight bus
rarely we'll see a happy child amongst us

and if i did, i'm white, schooled, and skinny
so no one worth a damn will possibly believe
there's hatred held high up my sleeve

fighting goes on without reason
when liquor, horse-like laughter, and racial teasing
pierce the late late diner smoke
hardened fists complete the joke

i've ceased to wait for hate to leave town
i drag it hidden, all around
amongst the sluts with hopeful dreams
to shelter through the night's routines
