head-splitting roars of active machinery (2009)

the road outside my apartment
was perfect for driving away
but someone decided today
that it could become a little more perfect

and this someone called a construction crew
that rang my doorbell asking questions
testing if i was a man who possessed patience
as part of a company safety procedure

i stood in my boxers and a farmer shirt
acting the way i'm expected to act
smiling politely, ignoring the fact
that these men were after my sanity

we parted ways, and over coffee
i continued scratching ideas onto a pad
knowing that up there today, there was a god
punishing sexual immorality with wit and vigor

somewhere along the chain of causality
this god and i just didn't jive
splitting ways on the blade-edge of a knife
to the aimless head-splitting roars of active machinery
