a little tongue for good measure (2010)

tonight the sky cracks open its lips
and slips a little tongue for good measure
for once, it gives me great pleasure
to return the favor without a thought

the reason is an apple or a letter
or a side-tracked smile
in the soup isle
of the grocery store

the feeling is nothing more
than a passing ode
to the pains of growing old
and the captain of a sinking ship
who refuses to bail
